ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Eureka College baseball team has been voted to finish fourth in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division this spring, according to an announcement from the league office Wednesday.
League coaches once again selected Spalding and Webster as the favorites for the 2020 SLIAC baseball season. Both squads received nine first-place votes each in their respectively divisions.
In the West, Webster led the way with 45 points, while Fontbonne and Westminster followed with 30 and 29 points, respectively. Just as last year, Eureka tallied 18 points and Iowa Wesleyan had 13. Fontbonne received one first-place vote.
In the East, Spalding notched a division-high 45 points. Greenville, which received one first-place vote, was next with 37, followed by MacMurray (21), Blackburn (17) and Principia (15). .
In 2019, the Red Devils went 16-20, marking the first time the program has reached 16 wins since 2010 and only the second time since 2000. Despite a slew of season-ending injuries, the Red Devils were in the majority of the games they played and put themselves in position to finish over .500.
The team returns 19 players, including pitchers Greg Cluskey (East Peoria, Ill./Metamora), J.D. Theile (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community), Mason Diederich (Washington, Ill./Washington) and Brock Pettit (Ashland, Ill./A-C Central), catcher Dean Moir (Coal City, Ill./Coal City), shortstop Mike Redmond (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) and outfielder Braxten Ary (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central), among others.
The Red Devils will open the 2020 campaign with a three-game set in Jackson, Mississippi, from Feb. 21-23.
On Feb. 29, Eureka will host Westminster for its first home double header at 1 p.m and 4 p.m.. The Red Devils are tentatively scheduled to play 13 home games at Henry Sand Field this spring.
