Red Devils Complete Sweep of Blackburn with 12-2 Victory
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka baseball team capped off a weekend sweep of Blackburn on Sunday, defeating the Beavers 12-2 in a nonconference matchup at Henry Sand Field.
The Red Devils got on the board early, as Jon Leon Guerrero (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) doubled to right field, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Conor Fitzpatrick (North Barrington, Ill./Barrington), and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Perrine (Payson, Ill./Payson Seymour) to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Eureka broke the game open in the fifth, erupting for nine runs on just two hits, aided by three Blackburn errors. Fitzpatrick reached and later scored on a passed ball, and after walks by Mike Dunne (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) and Nickolas Cartmill (Fort Worth, Texas/Burleson), Ace Padilla (Castle Rock, Colo./Grayslake North) capitalized on an error to drive in three runs. Gabe Peters (Washington, Ill./Washington Community) added an RBI double, and Dunne capped the inning with a three-RBI double to center, making it 10-0.
Blackburn answered with a two-run homer by Medrano in the sixth, but the Red Devils kept control defensively.
In the eighth, Eureka tacked on two more runs. Perrine led off with a double and scored on an RBI double by Cartmill, and David Hidden (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Cartmill and seal the 12-2 win.
