Eureka Drops Road Matchup at Monmouth
MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Eureka men's basketball team couldn't keep pace on Saturday afternoon, falling 86-61 on the road to Monmouth.
Eureka opened with energy, getting a 3-pointer from Andrew Coker (Washington, Ill./Washington Community) to strike first. After Monmouth opened their scoring, Coker answered again to give the Red Devils a 5-2 advantage. The Scots responded with an 8-0 run, but Coker continued to shoulder the offense, scoring the first 11 points of the afternoon for Eureka.
Trailing 17-7, the Red Devils punched back with a 6-0 spurt highlighted by a four-point play from Coker and a jumper by Jaxson Provost (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara) to pull within four. After Monmouth extended its lead to 23-16, Eureka surged ahead for the first time since the opening minutes with a 10-1 run capped by a Blake Logsdon (Meridian, Idaho/Mountain View) layup to take a 26-24 lead.
From there, Monmouth regained control, closing the half on a 17-6 stretch to take a 41-32 lead into the break. Provost led Eureka at halftime with 12 points.
Monmouth seized momentum immediately out of the locker room with a decisive 14-2 run to build a 55-34 advantage. A bucket by Jacob Gonzalez (Los Angeles, Calif./Chatsworth Charter) and a transition layup from Logsdon briefly halted the surge, but the Scots maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
Coker paced Eureka with 13 points, while Provost finished with 12. Colin DeLaere (Pekin, Ill./Pekin Community) added eight points and five rebounds off the bench, and Jonah Lauff (Washington, Ill./Washington Community) chipped in six points and three rebounds.
