LAST MEETING:
Eureka earned an 80-77 victory over Blackburn in Eureka earlier this year, opening SLIAC play in dramatic fashion. Jaxson Provost delivered a career-high 32 points and buried the game-winning three-pointer in the closing seconds to lift the Red Devils to a win.
Provost scored Eureka's first 10 points and finished the night shooting 11-of-19 from the floor, adding five assists and two steals. The Red Devils led for much of the contest before Blackburn surged late, setting the stage for a thrilling finish. After Blackburn tied the game at 77-77 in the final seconds, Ben Carter secured a defensive rebound and pushed the ball ahead to Andrew Coker, who found Provost open in the corner for the decisive triple in the closing seconds of the game.
Coker posted his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Carter added 11 points and nine boards. Max Richardson chipped in nine points, and Micah Bruer contributed six points and six assists in the win.
LAST TIME OUT:
Eureka enters Saturday's matchup following a 75-63 setback to Rockford on Dec. 15 at Illinois Wesleyan, where the game was relocated after a shattered backboard in pregame warmups.
The Red Devils opened the game strong, jumping out to a 15-8 lead behind early buckets from Andrew Coker, Ben Carter, and Max Richardson. Rockford responded with a decisive run late in the first half, carrying a 38-23 advantage into the break.
Eureka battled back in the second half, trimming the deficit to one point midway through the period, but Rockford answered with timely scoring to pull away late. Coker and Provost led Eureka with 15 points apiece, while Carter recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Richardson added 10 points, and Bruer finished with nine.
BLACKBURN BREAKDOWN:
Blackburn comes into the rematch after an 81-74 loss to Illinois College in a tightly contested game that featured 13 ties and multiple lead changes. The Beavers leaned on balanced scoring, led by Payton Cook and Jaylen Jeter with 18 points each. Evan Jordan and Kamerin Carter added eight points apiece, while Darius Duff paced the team with five rebounds.
Blackburn's energy and depth were on display throughout the game, as the Beavers used second-chance opportunities and strong ball movement to stay within striking distance. A late Illinois College three-pointer ultimately proved decisive, but Blackburn showed its ability to compete deep into the final minutes.
KEYS TO THE GAME:
Rebounding will be critical for Eureka on Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils are 2-0 this season when they out-rebound their opponents, but 0-9 when they are outworked on the glass, making control of the boards a key factor in determining the outcome.
Eureka has seen more balanced scoring in recent outings. The Red Devils placed four players in double figures against Rockford and had five players score in double figures against Westminster, a trend that has made the Red Devils a tougher team to guard.
Defensively, limiting Blackburn's top scoring options will be a major point of emphasis. In the first meeting, Evan Jordan, Kcion Welch, and Jaylen Jeter combined for 51 of the Beavers' 77 points. Containing that trio will be essential for Eureka to find success in the rematch.
Eureka will again look to Jaxson Provost to set the tone offensively. The Red Devils leaned heavily on Provost in the first matchup, where he poured in a career-high 32 points and hit the game-winning three-pointer, and his ability to score and create opportunities for others will be central to the game plan once again.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Eureka will return home following the road trip, hosting MUW on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. as SLIAC play continues.
