Wutzke’s 16 Kills Lead Eureka Past Greenville

EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches Saturday afternoon, defeating Greenville in four sets, 27-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-18.

The opening set featured 15 ties as neither was team able to create much separation. Deadlocked at 15-15, Eureka used a 3-0 run, capped by a kill from Dyson Wutzke (San Diego, Calif./El Capitan), to move in front 18-15. Greenville answered to even the score at 20-20 and later grabbed a 23-22 edge. Ignacio Hernandez (Venezuela/Saint Francis Puerto Rico) responded with a kill to tie the set, and after the Panthers moved within a point of taking the set at 25-24, Hernandez delivered back-to-back kills to swing momentum. A Greenville attacking error ended the set, giving the Red Devils a 27-25 win.

Eureka carried that energy into the second set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead behind kills from Javier Polacio (Colombia/CBCPM) and Wutzke. Greenville battled back to take a brief 7-6 lead, but Eureka answered with three straight points to regain control. The Panthers again surged ahead 12-10 before the Red Devils put together a decisive 4-0 run to go up 14-12. Greenville closed within 21-20, but Mason Johnson (Grove City, Minn./Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City) delivered a late kill as Eureka secured the 25-22 set win to take a two-set advantage.

The third set remained tight throughout, with the teams tied at 17-17. Greenville then strung together three consecutive points to take a 20-17 lead. A Polacio kill trimmed the deficit to 21-19, but the Panthers closed on a 4-0 run to claim the set 25-19 and extend the match.

Eureka responded quickly in the fourth. Holding an 8-7 lead, the Red Devils erupted for six straight points, fueled by kills from Wutzke and Johnson and an ace from Polacio, to build a 14-7 cushion. Greenville cut the margin to 20-16, but Wutzke and Maddox Kluesner (Magna, Utah/Stansbury) recorded key kills down the stretch. Polacio sealed the match with a service ace, giving Eureka the 25-18 set win.

Wutzke led Eureka with 16 kills. Johnson added 11 kills, two aces, and eight digs, while Kluesner contributed five kills and five blocks. Polacio finished with five kills and three aces. Kendall Killins (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield East) paced the defense with 17 digs, and Kawehi Kaneakua (Kalihi, Hawaii/University Laboratory School) dished out 42 assists to go along with eight digs.
