Eureka Falls to Webster at Home
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead Wednesday night, but Webster pulled away as the Red Devils fell 89-42.
The Red Devils came out aggressively and struck first. Brooklyn Bowman (Washington, Ill./Washington) turned a turnover into a layup just 54 seconds in to give Eureka a 2-0 lead. After Webster answered, Kayla Collins (Fort Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Christian) knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key to trim the deficit to one. Miracle Armstrong (Chicago, Ill./Wendell Phillips) added a jumper to briefly put Eureka back in front, and Collins later hit a pair of free throws to give the Red Devils their largest lead of the night at 11-9. Webster closed the quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 21-11 advantage after one.
In the second, Armstrong scored off a turnover, and Bowman knocked down a jumper in the closing seconds of the half. Lailah Hadley (Indianapolis, Ind./Purdue Polytechnic) added a strong drive inside late in the period, and Collins continued to produce at the free throw line, but Eureka trailed 46-21 at the break.
Kenna Newton (Toulon, Ill./Stark County) scored the Red Devils' first points of the third quarter with a three-pointer, and Collins later connected from deep as well. Abigail Martinez (Los Alamos, N.M./Los Alamos) provided a spark and anchored key defensive possessions with multiple blocked shots, but Eureka trailed 72-31 at the end of the third.
Eureka continued to battle in the final frame, with Collins adding another basket and Armstrong staying active on both ends. Bowman remained efficient in her minutes, and the Red Devils fought for rebounds and second-chance opportunities through the final horn but ultimately fell 89-42.
Collins led the way for Eureka with 20 points, going 8-of-13 at the free-throw line and adding four rebounds. Bowman finished 2-for-2 from the field with four points and five rebounds, while Armstrong totaled four points and four rebounds. Newton chipped in eight points off the bench, and Hadley added two points and four rebounds.
