Eureka Wrestling Battles at Highly Competitive Luther Open

DECORAH, Iowa – The Eureka wrestling program took on a deep and nationally competitive field at the Luther Open on Saturday, gaining valuable mid-November mat time across both the women's and men's divisions.

The Red Devils' women's team saw multiple wrestlers advance in their brackets behind early wins. Tayla Phillips led the way at 207 pounds, earning a first-round bye before posting a 2-0 decision victory. She added a win by fall in 2:11 to secure a fourth-place finish. Madison Farris (160) also delivered an impressive day, collecting back-to-back pins in 1:46 and 1:09 after an opening bye. Randi Campe (131) and Vivian Guither (145) each opened with wins, Campe by fall in 2:08 and Guither by 12-8 decision.

In the Elite men's division, Billy Tucker (149) turned in one of the team's top performances, advancing deep into his bracket with a major decision (15-3) and two falls (1:02, 3:21) after dropping his opener. Trevor Hedges (141) bounced back from an early injury default to go 2-2 on the day, including a pin in 43 seconds and a tech fall win.

The Red Devils also fielded a large group in the Silver men's division. Tristan Mosack (133) continued his strong freshman campaign with a 7-3 decision in his opening match before withdrawing by medical forfeit. Tanner Finin (141) added a fall in 6:57 and took his final bout to sudden victory, while Jeremiah Crisp (149) posted a 2-2 day with a fall and a 14-11 decision win. Sargent Maubach (174) notched a 9-4 decision on his way to an eighth-place finish.

Head coach Eric Biehl said the Luther Open provided a meaningful test at this stage of the season.

"This is a tough tournament with a lot of nationally ranked teams from all divisions," Biehl said. "I think some of our newer wrestlers surprised themselves with how they competed and I think some of our veterans felt they could have gotten deeper in the bracket. We came up short in some areas and excelled in others. Overall, it was a good showing. It's still very early and we're on the way to where we want to be."
