Red Devils Battle Through Deep Field at MSOE Invite
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Eureka men's wrestling team competed at the MSOE Invite on Saturday, continuing the early portion of the season with a full day of matches against a deep field.
Several Red Devils turned in strong performances throughout the day, highlighted by a sixth-place finish from Tanner Finin at 141 pounds. Finin put together an impressive run, opening the tournament with three straight wins. He earned a pin in 1:14 before adding back-to-back decision victories by scores of 13-6 and 11-7. After suffering a major decision loss (11-3), Finin continued to battle before closing the day with losses by tech fall (5:55) and major decision (14-2) to secure his sixth-place finish.
At 174 pounds, Sargent Maubach advanced through a challenging bracket to turn in a solid showing. After receiving an opening-round bye, Maubach rebounded from a loss by fall with consecutive wins by tech fall (6:42) and decision (9-4). He narrowly missed a higher placement after dropping a sudden-victory decision, 6-3.
Alex Muhammad and Dalarian Rose both competed at 157 pounds, each earning wins by fall. Muhammad picked up a quick pin in 0:33 over teammate Rose and later battled through a loss by tech fall (2:25) after an earlier loss by fall. Rose opened his day with a pin in 2:12 before facing a tough stretch that included losses by fall.
Patrick Fields represented the Red Devils at 197 pounds, opening with a bye before dropping a match by tech fall. He bounced back with a tech fall victory of his own (3:28) before closing the tournament with a loss by disqualification.
Billy Tucker competed at 149 pounds, earning a decision win (10-7) in the middle of his day after opening with a loss by fall and later closing with another fall loss.
Head coach Eric Biehl viewed the weekend as an important measuring stick for his squad, which also included competition at the Carthage women's tournament on Sunday.
"These tournaments were good tests to see where we need to improve," Biehl said. "We saw some success and we got humbled in places that we will fix! I am excited to see where we are after we clean up little items."
Eureka continues to use the early-season tournaments as opportunities to evaluate progress and make adjustments as the season moves forward.
