Red Devils Tested in Home Opener Against Aurora
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka wrestling teams opened their home schedules Wednesday night with a dual against Aurora. The Eureka women fell 41-1, followed by a 43-11 setback by the men against the Spartans.
The women's dual opened with Aurora building an early lead through a string of forfeits at 103, 110, 117, and 124 pounds. At 131, Krisean Buchana battled Emma Engels before falling by technical fall, while Randi Campe faced Sophia Ball at 138 with the Spartans again earning a technical fall. Madison Farris competed at 160 and went the distance into the sixth minute before being pinned by Makayla Howard. The lone Eureka point of the night came at 207 pounds, where Tayla Phillips dropped a narrow 5-2 decision to Anneliese Tavira, earning a point for the Red Devils.
On the men's side, Eureka picked up two victories against a strong Aurora lineup. Trevor Hedges delivered a dominant performance at 141 pounds, earning a 17-1 technical fall over Kalani Khiev to put Eureka on the board. Patrick Fields added another victory at 197, securing a quick pin in just 55 seconds over Oscar Antonio. Aurora, however, controlled much of the dual with wins throughout the middle and upper weights, including pins at 133, 157, 174, and 285, along with major decisions and technical falls at 149, 165, and 184.
Despite the results, the night provided valuable mat time for the Red Devils as they continue to build momentum early in the season and gain experience against quality competition.
