Strong First Half Fades as Eureka Falls at Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. – A tightly contested first half gave way to a difficult third quarter for the Eureka women's basketball team, as the Red Devils fell to Lyon 87-60 on the road Thursday night.

Eureka came out sharp, grabbing the first points of the game when Miracle Armstrong (Chicago, Ill./Wendell Phillips) knocked down a jumper for a 2-0 lead. Lyon answered with five straight before Armstrong responded again, drilling a three-pointer to even things at 5-5. After another Lyon bucket, Lailah Hadley (Indianapolis, Ind./Purdue Polytechnic) tied the game with a strong finish at the rim.

The Scots used a 6-0 burst to open a small gap, but Armstrong stayed hot, burying another three to pull Eureka within 13-10. She accounted for eight of the Red Devils' first 10 points, keeping the offense steady. Kayla Collins (Fort Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Christian) then took control, scoring five straight to trim the deficit to 16-15. Hadley closed the quarter with a bucket, sending the game into the second tied at 17-17.

Lyon nudged in front early in the second, but Railynn Brown (Erlanger, Ky./Lloyd Memorial) ignited Eureka's offense. Brown scored eight of the Red Devils' next 10 points, helping erase the deficit and knot the score at 27-27.

Momentum swung when Brooklyn Bowman (Washington, Ill./Washington) came up with a steal that led to a Kenna Newton (Toulon, Ill./Stark County) three-pointer, giving Eureka its first lead since the opening minute at 30-27. The Scots answered, but Brown stayed aggressive, knocking down her third triple of the quarter to put Eureka back in front, 33-31.

Lyon responded with a 7-0 run, only for Eureka to counter with six straight points of its own in a game that refused to slow down. The Scots had the final say before the break, taking a narrow 40-39 edge into halftime.

Lyon opened the second half with four quick points before Armstrong got Eureka on the board with a layup. From there, the Scots seized control, stringing together a 14-0 run that pushed the margin to 58-41.

Abigail Martinez (Los Alamos, N.M./Los Alamos) ended the drought at the free throw line, but Lyon continued to build separation, extending the lead past 20 points. The Scots carried a 68-49 advantage into the fourth and maintained control down the stretch, extending the lead to as many as 29 before closing out the 87-60 decision.

Armstrong led Eureka with 14 points. Hadley added 13 points along with five steals and five rebounds. Brown finished with 13 points and seven boards while collecting four steals. Bowman chipped in six points and pulled down seven rebounds.
