EUREKA, Ill. – For the first time in program history, the Eureka volleyball team defeated Webster, with set scores of 16-25, 25-18, 25-14, 18-25, and 15-11.
After losing the first set, the Red Devils bounced back, dominating the second and third sets to take control of the match. Freshman Alyssa Company (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln Community) led the charge for the Red Devils, recording 7 of her team-high 12 kills in those sets. The Gorloks fought back, taking the fourth set to send the match the distance.
In the final set, the Red Devils fell behind 4-2 early but rallied to level the score. The set remained tight down the stretch, but the Red Devils eventually found themselves leading 13-11. Senior Halle Gauna (Arcola, Ill./Arcola) delivered a crucial kill to put the Red Devils within a point of victory. On the ensuing serve, freshman Chelsea Beck (Clay City, Ill./Clay City) recorded her third service ace of the match, securing the win and marking the first-ever victory over the Gorloks.
Alyssa Company led the Red Devils with 12 kills and 5 solo blocks, while Hallee Gauna and Frannie Heckman (Benson, Ill./Roanoke-Benson) each added 7 kills. Claire Schaffner (Delavan, Ill./Delavan) once again led the team with 14 assists, followed by Chelsea Beck with 11. Brooklyn Shell (Evansville, Ind./Mount Vernon) led with 13 digs, closely followed by Claire Schaffner with 12.
