Red Devils Take Down Principia for Second Straight Win

EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka women's volleyball team earned its second straight victory Tuesday night, defeating Principia in four sets. The Red Devils posted set scores of 24-26, 25-13, 25-16 and 25-20 to improve to 6-11 on the season.

Eureka led most of the first set, building advantages of 15-8 and 24-20 before Principia rallied to win the final six points and take the opener, 26-24.

After narrowly dropping the first set, the Red Devils responded by winning the next three. Eureka took control early in the second frame behind strong serving from Brooklyn Shell (Evansville, Ind./Mount Vernon) and Colbie Grieff (South Wilmington, Ill./Gardner South-Wilmington), who each recorded multiple aces in the set. Maleaha Nagel (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) and Shell closed it out with back-to-back kills to even the match with a dominant 25-13 win.

The Red Devils carried that momentum into the third, using another surge from the service line to pull away. Lexi Liaromatis (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) tallied two aces in an early 6-0 run, while Shell added two more as Eureka built a commanding lead. Alyssa Company (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln Community) and Nagel sealed the 25-16 win with late kills.

In the fourth and final set, Eureka capitalized on a series of Principia errors and steady scoring to close out the match. Company delivered the final kill to secure a 25-20 victory and the Red Devils' second straight win.

Eureka's serving proved to be the difference, as the Red Devils racked up a season high 18 aces. Company paced the offense with 14 kills, three aces and 17 total points. Shell and Grieff each added a season high four aces, while Liaromatis chipped in 11 digs and three aces. Claire Schaffner (Delavan, Ill./Delavan) guided the attack with 14 assists.
