Corinne DeBoard, Javy Garcia Named Eureka College Scholar Athlete of the Week

EUREKA, Ill. – Corinne DeBoard (Centralia, Ill./Christ Our Rock Lutheran) and Javy Garcia (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) are this week's Eureka College Scholar Athletes of the Week.

The Eureka College Scholar Athlete of the Week award goes to one male and one female student-athlete every week based on academic achievement and performance in that week's slate of athletic competitions. EC student-athletes must hold at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average and have completed at least one semester to be eligible for the award.

This week, DeBoard led the EC volleyball team at the net, racking up 44 kills in five matches over 19 sets in just four days. The senior averaged 2.32 kills per set while hitting .246 and twice reaching double-digit kills. Against Lawrence on Friday, she notched 10 kills, averaging 3.33 kills per set and hitting a week-high .381. Then, the next morning, she tallied a team-high 13 kills while hitting .212 in five-set win Maranatha Baptist.

DeBoard, a secondary education major with an emphasis in mathematics, holds a 4.0 grade point average and is a two-time St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic selection.

Garcia was the highest finisher for the EC cross country team at the squad's second meet of the season at Maxwell Park in Normal on Friday. The junior came in 26th place in 23:54 in his first-ever 8k race. He has been a leader of the EC cross country team since the program relaunched in early 2020.

Garcia is a secondary education major with an emphasis in history and political science.
